September 26 in Newport's America's Cup History!

September 26 is a day that will live forever in America's Cup history.  On this day in 1958 and 1983 two unforgettable America's Cup races ended in Newport!  Sailing fans across the country felt the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

VICTORY!  September 26, 1958 12 Meter US 16, Columbia beat her English competitor, Sceptre, in the fourth and final race of the America's Cup.  This victory made Columbia the first 12 Meter yacht to win the America's Cup.  It has been 54 years but she is still sailing strong!

DEFEAT!  September 26, 1983 - Australia II beat Dennis Conner's Liberty in the seventh and final race ending the American's 132 year winning streak and taking the America's Cup out of Newport!

It has been thirty years since the America's Cup race was in Newport but the spirit of the Auld Mug still lives on in Newporters!

Throwback Thursday - Columbia's First Year Of Sailing in Newport

As 12 Meter Charters starts another season of sailing in Newport we think back to the first year our 12 Meter yachts were sailing.

In the spring of 1958, 12 Meter Columbia US 16 was launched.  Below is a picture of Columbia on September 20, 1958 winning her first race of the America's Cup finals.  She crossed the finish line over eight minutes before her competitor, Sceptre.

Today Columbia continues in her speedy, winning ways.  Last season she had a dominating victory and the 12 Meter North American Championship and was awarded the Ted Hood Trophy for the best racing performance of 2012!

Columbia in the Boatyard with Famous Yachts!

Columbia spent her winter vacation at New England Boatworks in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.  Our 1958 America's Cup winner was "vacationing" in good company this winter.  The picture above shows her winter spot along side other yachting greats.  From right to left, Billy Joel's, Vendetta from Oyster Bay, New York is under cover.  The black hulled beauty is Newport racer, Bolero.  The empty spot in the middle was ocupied by Spartan(pictured below), a Herreshoff designed NY 50, that left the shed earlier this week.  And our beautiful 12 Meter, Columbia is on the far left.

Thank you to Captain Kevin for all his hard work getting Columbia ready for the 2012 racing season and for the wonderful photos.

Stay tuned for launching photos later this month when Columbia makes a splash!  She'll be sailing in less than a month - come join us for a Newport 12 Meter sail this summer!
