Happy US Coast Guard Day from Newport, RI!

Today, August 4th, is United States Coast Guard Day commemorating the founding of the US Coast Guard on August 4, 1790, by then Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. On that date, Congress, authorized the building of a fleet of the first ten Coast Guard service cutters, whose responsibility would be enforcement of the first tariff laws enacted by Congress under the Constitution.

The Tall Ship Eagle is the Coast Guard's official sail training vessel for future officers.  Here are some great shots Captain Duncan took of the Eagle in Newport last summer.

Happy 223rd Birthday Coast Guard, thank you for all you do to keep the waters of Newport, Rhode Island safe!
