Welcome to Newport Tall Ship, Charles Morgan!

Yesterday, Sunday, June 15, the historic Tall Ship, Charles Morgan sailed into Newport, Rhode Island as a stop on its 38th Voyage.  The Charles Morgan, an 1841 whaleship, is America's oldest commercial vessel.  After recently being restored at Mystic Seaport, Newport is the first stop on the ship's first sailing voyage since 1921!

The Charles Morgan cast off from City Pier in New London, Connecticut, at 6:15 a.m. and was towed up Fishers Island Sound and through Watch Hill Passage. Once on Block Island Sound the ship dropped the tow and set all working sail to make her way to Newport. She arrived in Newport Harbor at 6:00pm. “Seeing the ship with her sails set just as they were in the heyday of her whaling career was an incredible sight. It was truly seeing history come alive,” said Steve White, president of Mystic Seaport. For more about the Charles Morgan's visit to Newport visit http://www.mysticseaport.org/news/2014/the-charles-w-morgan-sails-to-newport/.
The Charles Morgan is docked at Fort Adams(see below) and will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.  Come to Newport to see this historic Tall Ship!
