Newport's Great Gatsby
As we listen to all the hype about the new Great Gatsby movie opening today, May 10, we are reminded of a time when Newport was the center of The Great Gatsby! Check out these pictures of Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby. Recognize that mansion behind Redford? Yes, that is Newport's Rosecliff Mansion where much of the film was shot. Come to Newport and experience the luxurious "Gatsby lifestyle" at its finest!

Dolphin or Porpoise?
October was the month of Dolphin sightings in Newport! We have seen dolphins on almost every sail this month. The sightings have lead us to the question - what is the difference between a Dolphin and a Porpoise?
They are different families (dophins: Delphinidae; porpoises Phocoenidae). The main differences are dolphins have a longer snout, conical teeth, and a larger dorsal fin (often curved) and porpoises have rounded snouts, smaller dorsal fins, and flat teeth. The social groups of dolphins are generally larger and more closely knit.
Here are a few more photos Captain Duncan took of our October dolphin sightings and a great video Mate Gus shot!

Waiting for Sandy and Remembering Irene!
As Newport prepares for Hurricane Sandy, we are thankful that she is gracing us with her presences after our sailing season! All of the preparations and worried sailors in Newport make us remember August 2011 when the Heritage Team prepared for Hurricane Irene. Check out these before, during and after shots from Irene's visit to Newport.

Today's Marine Wildlife Encounter in Newport!
October has been the month of spying ocean creatures in Newport...and we are only a week into the month! Today while cruising on the southern part of Narragansett Bay between Hammersmith Farm and Castle Hill, the Heritage team spotted an Ocean Sunfish or Mola Mola. Ocean Sunfish are the heaviest known bony fish and feed off of jelly fish which are abundant in the Bay right now.
Keep your eyes peeled when you are out on the water in Newport for more marine animals. What do you think we will see next?
