Dolphin or Porpoise?
October was the month of Dolphin sightings in Newport! We have seen dolphins on almost every sail this month. The sightings have lead us to the question - what is the difference between a Dolphin and a Porpoise?
They are different families (dophins: Delphinidae; porpoises Phocoenidae). The main differences are dolphins have a longer snout, conical teeth, and a larger dorsal fin (often curved) and porpoises have rounded snouts, smaller dorsal fins, and flat teeth. The social groups of dolphins are generally larger and more closely knit.
Here are a few more photos Captain Duncan took of our October dolphin sightings and a great video Mate Gus shot!

Farewell Columbia!
Last week our America's Cup winner wrapped up another fabulous season of 12 Meter sailing in Newport! It was sunny, warm and beautiful for US 16's last sails - weather that made even Captain Kevin smile! Thank you to everyone who joined us aboard Columbia this season. We look forward to welcoming you aboard in 2013!

Waiting for Sandy and Remembering Irene!
As Newport prepares for Hurricane Sandy, we are thankful that she is gracing us with her presences after our sailing season! All of the preparations and worried sailors in Newport make us remember August 2011 when the Heritage Team prepared for Hurricane Irene. Check out these before, during and after shots from Irene's visit to Newport.
During Irene...Heritage weathering the storm on her mooring off Goat Island.
After Irene...Heritage is bright, beautiful and ready for sailing!

Heritage Heads to Hibernate!
Last Saturday, the Heritage team made the long delivery north to her winter home in Marblehead, Massachusetts. It was an all male crew with Captain Jeff, Captain Duncan and Mate Gus (you always have to have an Indian to help the Chiefs on board!).
The Heritage team left Bannister's Wharf at 5:15am. The weather was warm but dark, damp and foggy as they motored out of Newport Harbor. The patchy fog continued until they got into Buzzards Bay. Once
through the Cape Cod Canal they were able to raise the main and motor-sailed across Cape
Cod and Massachusetts Bays, heading toward increasingly clearing skies. At 5:15pm, 12 hours after they left Newport they arrived in Marblehead Harbor under clear skies and a setting sun. Check out this great pictures Captain Duncan took during their trip.
Thanks again for a great season Heritage! Enjoy your winter vacation!
